Big country homes take longer to clean

A lot of College Grove is still farm country, with houses set back on big lots off two-lane roads. Some are older farmhouses with wood floors and deep porches. Many are newer and large, with tall ceilings and long runs of hardwood. A bigger house simply has more to clean. It also has more places where dust settles out of sight, like the top of a tall window frame or a ceiling fan.

When a big house only gets a quick pass, the same few rooms get cleaned every time and the rest slowly fall behind. The guest bath nobody uses grows a ring in the toilet. Dust packs onto a fan and drops back down the next time it turns on. Baseboards along a long hallway go gray. None of it shows in a week, but after a few months the house feels dirty right after the kitchen is wiped down.

Luxury homes are a separate service on our list, because a house that size needs a plan before the crew walks in. We ask which rooms get used every day and which ones stay closed, and we clean to the list you give us. That way the far end of the house gets the same care as the kitchen. Mud and pollen come into the house

Out here, a lot of the outdoors comes inside. Gravel drives and pastures get muddy after a hard rain, and the soil in this part of Middle Tennessee is heavy in clay. That mud rides in on boots and on the dog, and it does not sweep up clean. It dries into a fine film on tile and works down into the grout lines. On hardwood, the next pair of shoes grinds it in.

Spring brings its own mess. For a few weeks the pollen is thick enough to turn cars and porch rails yellow, and it drifts in every time a door opens. It lands on window sills and the tops of cabinets, and it keeps coming back until the trees are done. Summer is hot and humid, so the house stays shut with the air running, and the vent covers gather dust.

So the cleaning changes with the season. After a wet stretch, the floors by the doors get the most time, and the grout gets scrubbed instead of mopped over. Pollen season means sills and high surfaces get wiped down, since that yellow dust comes back fast. In the humid summer we watch the caulk around tubs and showers, where mildew starts as a few gray dots.
