Murfreesboro has spread a long way out from the courthouse square, so the houses here fall into two very different groups. Near downtown and along East Main Street, many homes are older, with tall ceilings and a lot of painted wood trim. Out toward Blackman and the edges of town, it's mostly newer builds in subdivisions, with open floor plans and carpet in the bedrooms. We clean both. We don't clean them the same way.

An older house holds dust in places a new one doesn't have. Wide baseboards and deep window sills collect a gray layer, and the grooves in old door trim hold whatever a quick wipe misses. So we do that trim by hand. Old wood floors need a lighter touch too. Too much water can raise the grain and leave the finish cloudy, so they get a damp mop, never a soaking wet one.

Newer homes have their own trouble spots. A tall entry or a vaulted living room puts ceiling fans and plant ledges out of reach, and dust sits up there for months. Carpet on the stairs and in the bedrooms holds whatever comes in on shoes, so it gets a slow, full vacuum. Stone counters and glass shower doors show every streak. We wipe them dry before we leave.

Clay and pollen get into the house

After a rain, the heavy clay around Murfreesboro sticks to shoes and dog paws. It's worst in the newer subdivisions, where yards are young and the lot next door might still be bare dirt. Once that mud dries, it turns into a fine dust. It settles just inside the door and works down into carpet. That's why we spend extra time at the entries and on the rugs that catch it first.

Spring brings heavy tree pollen to Middle Tennessee. A yellow film lands on window sills and every flat surface near an open window, and it comes in on clothes and pets. Both get harder to remove the longer they sit, so we scrub them every visit instead of saving them for later.

Middle Tennessee State University brings a lot of rental houses and apartments to Murfreesboro. Many change tenants when the school year ends. The landlord needs the place ready for the next lease, and the tenant wants the deposit back. A move-out cleaning goes further than a regular visit.
