Big Brentwood houses need a cleaning plan

Brentwood filled in over the last few decades with large houses on big, wooded lots. You see older brick homes around Brentwood Country Club and newer, bigger ones in a gated neighborhood like Governors Club. Most have a tall front entry with a staircase you can see from the door, and several full bathrooms. That adds up to a lot of trim and tile, and all of it collects dust whether anyone uses the room or not.

On a house this size, the order of the work matters. We start high and work down, so dust from ceiling fans and the tops of door frames falls onto floors we have not cleaned yet. Stair rails and spindles get wiped by hand, because a staircase in a tall entry is the first thing a guest sees. Skip the fan blades for a few visits, and the first time someone turns a fan on, it throws that dust onto clean tables.

Middle Tennessee has a long, heavy pollen season, and Brentwood's tree cover puts a lot of it right next to the house. From late winter into spring, tree pollen settles as a yellow-green film on porches and patio furniture. It comes in on shoes and through every door that opens to the deck. Inside, you find it on window sills and in sliding door tracks. A dry cloth just pushes it around, so it has to come up damp.

Rain brings its own mess. The ground here is heavy clay, and after a wet week the yards stay soft for days. Dogs and kids carry that mud across hardwood floors and into the rugs by the back door. Clay lifts easily while it is fresh. Once it dries and gets walked into a rug, it is much harder to get out. So after a wet week, the back entry and mudroom floor are where we spend extra time.

Summers here are hot and sticky. In humid air, a shower that gets used every day never fully dries. Soap film and mildew build up on the grout and glass doors. If the house has a finished basement, that bathroom tends to stay damp too. A regular wipe-down keeps grout from staining. Leave it alone for a season and you are scrubbing dark spots that may never fully come out.
