Oak Hill has older homes and new builds

Oak Hill is almost all houses. It sits just north of Brentwood, and there is very little in town besides homes on big, wooded lots. Many of those homes are brick ranch houses and two-story colonials built in the middle of the last century. More and more lots now hold a much larger new house where an older one was torn down. The same street can have both kinds side by side.

Older houses take more hand work. Bathrooms from that era often have small tiles and a lot of grout lines. That grout turns dark with soap film when it only gets a quick spray, so we scrub it. Hardwood floors get a damp mop rather than a wet one, since standing water works into the seams between boards. Built-in shelves and deep window sills collect dust that a fast wipe never reaches, so we clean the edges and corners too.

The new houses are a different job. Many of them are well over four thousand square feet, with tall ceilings and a lot of glass. Glass shower walls show every streak, and polished stone counters show every smear. Oak Hill's tree cover brings pollen indoors

Oak Hill is thick with big oaks and other hardwoods, and the woods around Radnor Lake are close by. Every spring those trees put out pollen for weeks. It comes in on shoes and through open doors, then settles as a yellow-green film on window sills and dark wood furniture. A dry cloth just pushes that film around the room. It has to come up with a damp cloth, and the floors need the same treatment.

Fall brings the leaves. On lots this wooded, bits of broken leaf and grit come in with every trip from the car. They collect along baseboards and in the tracks of sliding doors. Winters around Nashville are damp, and the soil here holds a lot of clay. Wet clay comes in on boots and leaves a film that smears when it is wiped dry. Entry floors need a real mop that time of year, and a mat by the door only catches part of it.

Summers here are hot and humid, and that is hard on bathrooms. Grout and shower caulk stay damp longer, and mildew shows up as dark spots in the corners and along the bottom of the shower. Cleaned early, those spots come off. Left for months, they work into the caulk and are very hard to get out. So regular cleaning in an Oak Hill house follows the seasons: pollen in spring, damp bathrooms in summer, leaves in fall and mud in winter.
