Wooded Forest Hills lots bring dirt inside

Forest Hills sits on hilly, wooded ground south of downtown Nashville, with houses set back on big lots and long driveways climbing through the trees. Those trees are most of the charm, and they also send a steady supply of the outdoors into the house. In spring the oaks and maples drop pollen, and it settles as a yellow film on window sills and door tops. You notice it on a dark countertop first. By then it is on every flat surface you own.

Fall brings leaves, and wet weather brings mud. The ground in Middle Tennessee is heavy clay, and it sticks to shoes and dog paws and rides in from the car. Broken leaf bits get carried into entry halls and pressed into rugs. None of it looks like much on any given day. But grit left on a hardwood floor acts like sandpaper under every footstep. The finish by the back door goes dull long before the rest of the room.

Summers are hot and damp, and that moisture has to go somewhere. In a house built into a hillside, it tends to collect on the lower level. A downstairs guest bath that gets used once a month can still grow mildew along the grout and the shower caulk. So we clean for the season we are in. When pollen is heavy, we spend more time on sills and ledges. In the fall, the entry floors and rugs get most of the attention.

Big Forest Hills houses need a routine

Many houses in Forest Hills are large, and some run well past four thousand square feet. That is the size our luxury home service is set up for. A house like that has more bathrooms than anyone uses in a normal week, plus guest rooms that stay shut for days. Closed rooms still collect dust. It builds up quietly on dressers and along baseboards until somebody opens the door for company.

A house that size only gets cleaned well when the work goes in the same order every visit. Dust knocked off a ceiling fan falls onto whatever sits below it, so the high work comes first and the floors come last. Skip that order and the same room needs cleaning twice. A newer house is more likely to have stone counters and big glass shower doors that show every water spot. Marble and similar stone can etch when vinegar or another acid cleaner sits on it, so we keep those off the counters.

Houses in Forest Hills change hands too, and a move-out or move-in cleaning is a different job from a regular visit. With the furniture gone, you can see every dust line where a bookcase stood and every scuff along the baseboards. Kitchen cabinets and drawers are empty, so the insides get wiped.
